Ochsenbraterei – ox roast beer tent munich Oktoberfest

Ochsenbraterei tent exterior at Oktoberfest with timber-framed facade, smoke from ox roast pits, and festive crowds entering.

The Ochsenbraterei tent fulfills its name (Ox Roastery) by concentrating on slow-roasting oxen, with more than 100 oxen consumed throughout Oktoberfest. During the daytime, it has a snug, country feel ideal for enjoying its signature tender roast ox dish over lunch.

Once night comes, the atmosphere changes: live music gets revved up, making the tent a vibrant spot without losing its earthy character.

the history

In 1881, butcher Johann Rössler introduced the first roasted whole ox at Oktoberfest on a special grill and with sly promotions such as posters touting it as a “rare amusement”. By 1980, the Spaten-Franziskaner Brewery bought the tent, and later renovated it in 2017 with a layout that balanced tradition and modernity.

Interestingly, it was the first Oktoberfest tent to include lunchtime music, which accounts for its midday patronage. Since 2010, the Haberl family has attempted to trademark its distinct curved façade—a sharp deviation from its elegant blue-and-white interior that sports wreaths and folk figures

Special Offerings

The wheelchair-friendly Ochsenbraterei tent provides an inclusive experience with wheelchair-accessible areas and barrier-free toilets (ground floor & beer garden) to provide inclusive comfort for all guests to enjoy the celebration.

Animal welfare comes first in this tent for using sustainably sourced ingredients and humane animal farming, providing ethical food production without losing quality.

Ochsenbraterei Beer

The tent dispenses Spaten Oktoberfest beer, a special local Munich offering that pairs well with its rich German fare. For those who don’t drink, the tent provides Spaten Mass non-alcoholic beer, in addition to soft drinks such as Afri Cola, Bluna Orange, Cola Mix, and sparkling water, so everyone can raise a glass to the celebration.

Ochsenbraterei Reservation 2025

The tent starts taking table reservations through its portal on April 10th, although early bookings typically feature irrelevant or unpopular hours. In 2024, highly sought-after evening reservations for every day of the week were unavailable until August, leaving patrons in suspense for months.

The tent is notoriously picky, amassing a deluge of requests only to weed out the majority with unknown criteria. But hang in there—last-minute reservations sometimes appear, providing a spark of hope for spontaneous travelers.

tent Location and accessibility

The tent is conveniently situated in the center of Theresienwiese, Munich’s famous Oktoberfest grounds. Conveniently accessible through the city’s well-organized public transport system, tourists can alight at the Theresienwiese U-Bahn station or Goetheplatz U-Bahn station, both within walking distance of the entrance to the tent. This strategic location provides a convenient experience for locals and foreign visitors alike.
