the history

In a light-hearted take on Bavarian custom, the Münchner Knödelei, founded in 2002 by Florian and Bettina Oberndorfer (of Wirtshaus in der Au fame), is Oktoberfest’s first dumpling haven. It was the first tiny tent to specialize in dumplings and to be positioned outside of the typical festival lanes, breaking the mold.

The tent transforms ordinary dumplings into culinary stars with everything from round classics (once a favorite of Princess Sissi) to daring innovations like square pretzel dumplings, weisswurst-filled knödel, and even beer lollipops. A large beer garden and kitchen were added in 2014, and it was recognized as an “Excellent Festival Tent” by the Bavarian government in 2019.

Beer

Paulaner beer and Knödelei’s inventive dumplings go hand in hand like clockwork. To ensure that every guest can toast to knödel bliss, the tent also provides wine, champagne, and non-alcoholic drinks for those looking for alternatives.

reservations

The Münchner Knödelei tent will launch its reservation portal on its website before May, so you have ample time to get ready for Oktoberfest. In the meantime, you can sit back, plan your dirndls, and select new lederhosen shirts because when bookings start, you don’t want to be caught off guard for this popular dumpling paradise.

tent Location

The only negative aspect of the Münchner Knödelei tent is its location, which changes every four years to accommodate the Central Agricultural Fair (ZLF), which replaces comfortable benches with tractors and farm exhibits. Even with this random interruption, the tent is still conveniently accessible by public transport, with stations close by providing guests with easy access.
