the history

Since 1810, Munich Oktoberfest has taken place at Theresienwiese, beginning as a horse race to mark Crown Prince Ludwig’s wedding. Under the administration of Munich’s city fathers since 1819, it expanded into an international tradition with amenities such as tree climbing and raffle booths. Nowadays, it has a traditional costume parade, with more than 150 units and marching bands, and is officially opened with the Mayor tapping the first keg, saying, “O’zapft is’!” For 2.5 weeks, millions of people drink Munich’s beer in festival tents.

Augustiner serving beer

Augustiner Beer is a traditional favorite at Oktoberfest, brewing its beer strictly to the German Purity Law. It is the sole brewery that still dispenses beer from 200-liter wooden barrels (Hirschen), providing its brews with a distinct, original flavor. The Oktoberfestbier is specifically brewed with additional original wort, making it more potent with alcohol content at 6-7%. The beer is famous for having a less intense and more developed flavor profile, as it contains lower levels of carbon dioxide than beer stored in steel tanks. For the first time in 2024, the Augustinerbrauerei were serving non-alcoholic beer.

Augustiner Festhalle menu

The tent has on its menu traditional Bavarian style coupled with a quality twist. Furnished from their own butcher shop, the nearby estate of the Granerhof around Peißenberg, dishes reflect more emphasis on region and local foods.

  • Meat options: Fans of meat enjoy great quality types like steaks, sausages, and pork roast from their butcher shop.
  • Vegetarian and Vegan Options: Vegetarians have the option of creamy mushrooms, vegetable patties, or spinach and quark dumplings, whereas vegans can enjoy hummus with beetroots, pumpkin seed bread, or tomato vegetable bolognese with durum pasta.
  • Children’s Menu: For children, there is a special menu with chicken tenders, macaroni and cheese, and mini hamburgers, making dining a pleasure for all ages.

Special offerings

Augustiner Festhalle offers an energetic and interactive Oktoberfest experience with live Bavarian brass music, folk dance shows, and yodeling performances that bring Bavarian culture back to life.
