the history
Originating as the Schützenhalle in 1876, the tent was a sole Oktoberfest staple by 1926, eventually relocating under Munich’s Bavaria statue in 1961. Neglected for years because of its off-the-beaten-path location, the Reinbold family revived it in 1979, which attracted Munich’s upper-crust youth with wine bars and VIP status.
A 2015 renovation included an imposing gallery, expanding capacity to 6,278 while changing its atmosphere from rowdy to upscale, appealing to older patrons. It is still famous for holding shooting competitions since 1896 and selling only Löwenbräu beer, and it is currently the largest tent at Oktoberfest by area, including its shooting range.
