the history

The Löwenbräu Festzelt has a rich legacy under Wiggerl Hagn, Oktoberfest’s longest-serving landlord until 2018. His family hosted at the Schützenzelt since 1953 before taking over the Löwenbräu tent in 1979. In 2019, his daughter Stephanie Spendler—his co-host for years—fully inherited the tent, now managing it with her son Lukas Spendler (since 2023).

The tent’s iconic 4.5-meter lion (a fixture since 1949) roars its famous Lööööwenbrääääu greeting. While the core design dates to 1956, the current structure was built in 1999. Updates include a 2016 facade revamp (ditching shabby shutters) and a 2011 LED lighting overhaul (replacing 16,500 bulbs). Though 2012’s large windows replaced traditional paintings, the tent retains its barrel-vaulted ceiling and festive soul.
